Την περασμένη εβδομάδα σε μια δεξαμενή στο Gallway της Ιρλανδίας βρέθηκαν τα πτώματα περίπου 800 μωρών και παιδιών. Η δεξαμενή βρισκόταν δίπλα σε έναν χώρο όπου για 36 χρόνια στεγαζόταν ένα ίδρυμα για ανύπαντρες μητέρες και τα παιδιά τους, ελεγχόμενο από την καθολική εκκλησία και υπό τη διεύθυνση ενός τάγματος καλογριών.

Τα πτώματα των παιδιών χρονολογούνται στα έτη 1925 - 1961, ακριβώς τα χρόνια της λειτουργίας του ιδρύματος και φαίνεται να έχουν πεθάνει από υποσιτισμό, παραμέληση και από απλές, αποτρέψιμες ασθένειες.

Το καθεστώς για τις ανύπαντρες μητέρες ήταν αυστηρό -συνήθως η οικογένεια υπό κοινωνική πίεση, έστελνε το κορίτσι σε τέτοια ιδρύματα για ν' αποφευχθεί η κατακραυγή και η "ντροπή". Οι κοπέλες και τα παιδιά τους δούλευαν σ' αυτά τα θρησκευτικά ιδρύματα σε άθλιες και εξαντλητικές συνθήκες. Πολλές από τις γυναίκες δολοφονήθηκαν και πολλά από τα παιδιά που επέζησαν πουλήθηκαν παράνομα σε άλλες χώρες (κυρίως στην Αμερική).

Ενώ είναι καλό να εξετάζουμε αυτά τα πράγματα και μέσα στο αντίστοιχο ιστορικό τους πλαίσιο, είναι επίσης απαραίτητο να μην ωραιοποιούμε την κατάσταση στην Ιρλανδία ακόμη και σήμερα. Το άρθρο είναι διαφωτιστικό για το παρελθόν και το παρόν.
